Billy’s Bat Cave

You just never know what is going to be next around here.  Sometimes things are a little  batty.  Strangely enough we like it that way.

Holly and Chris got  Billy an unusual gift for fathers day.  Yet, it is right up his alley.

This is a bat house.  I know…crazy huh?!?

Oh, you should have seen the look on his face when he opened it.  That wide eyed look……. beaming with excitement.

You could see those little wheels turning in his mind……

Billy has been very faithful to feed the catfish in our lake.  The last two weeks those little guys have really put on a show for him.  Often while he is feeding them at dusk…the bats start flying.  So we know we already have some visiting our area.

Now Billy will have a little place to provide them shelter and it would be fun to see them come out all at once around dusk.

Hopefully they will like this new home and take up residence.

Bats eat 600 to 1200 mosquito’s an hour.  I like that part of it.  They have a life span of up to 40 years.  That is a lot of bug eating over 40 years.

Sometimes we all pile up in a boat and go up the river.  There are lots of boats coming from every direction. We are all there for the same reason.  Everyone gets to a certain spot….. turns the boat engines off, and sits and waits.  Sometimes they sit and listen to music, some just talk and laugh, others bring a sandwich and picnic until the main event happens.

And then it happens…..and when it happens…..

IT HAPPENS……

Millions of bats come pouring out of the cave all at once.  It is quite spectacular.

The dusky sky is littered with a dark mass of flying creatures.  They emerge from the cave in droves….flying at speeds that are incredible, going in every direction in search of food.  It is both neat and eerie.

Everyone ooh’s and aah’s and squeals….then the boat engines start up and everyone heads back to their destination.

One night we did this and it was really neat….as we were heading back…one little bat’ s ultrasonic sounds weren’t working right apparently…..

He flew right into my lap!

The boat was cruising down the river, I immediately jumped up yelling and screaming from the back of the boat…..somehow ending up in my mother in laws lap, who was sitting in the middle of the boat.  It was quite a surprise for me and HER!

Bless her heart…it was a wonder I didn’t break her legs.

and the bat……well he was long gone.  He probably died of FREIGHT himself.

That is my most memorable trip to the bat cave by far.

Hopefully things won’t be that exciting around the lake with our new bat house.

Billy is still trying to decide the best place for this new addition of ours

I suppose when they occupy his dwelling and he turns into the real ” BAT MAN”…I will need to post an update!

Sonya — when Billy becomes BatMan, you can be Robin. Batman could not do better.
