The chicken saga continues

Our hens have taken a while to get used to their new dwelling.   We finally started getting a few eggs!

100_5944

It is VERY “eggciting”!  When I saw this beauty waiting for me one morning I felt like I was on an Easter egg hunt.  Look at that beautiful color.

The variety of hens we have this time, gives us a variety of egg colors as well.

100_5937

I love it.

However the chicken saga continues….. I know…I don’t like it either.

While we were out of town for a few days, I received a call.  When I get a call from my neighbor like that…it usually isn’t a good thing.

Sure enough something got one of the big girls….and our baby chick.

I really hate that.  The baby was just starting to get adult feathers.

When we returned, we went to check on everyone in the coop.  There sat one lone chicken…..Beverly….all by herself.

I was pretty horrified since I was just expecting to have one big one and one little one gone.

Billy and I looked around outside with our flashlight and found them.  They were all roosting in a cedar tree.

Needless to say I was glad to see them…but of course I worried all night about them.

Yesterday morning I checked on everyone and they were all accounted for.  The girls have only laid two eggs in about 5 days.  A decrease in egg production can have a lot to do with stress.  I believe we can safely say that is what is happening here.  Poor girls.

Around dusk I went to the coop to make sure they all got in safely.   However, they aren’t feeling safe anywhere right now.  I urged them to try the coop again….I coaxed them with some meal worms.

They loved the worms…but after eating them….they scooted off toward the tree.

100_6249

One flew into the tree right away….the others acted as if they were having a meeting about it all….

100_6250

“Ok ….do we go to the coop….or do we go for the tree again??????”

Of course I was shaking my little meal worm bucket trying to entice them to come back to the coop.

100_6251

After much deliberation…Beverly decided she was taking her chance in the coop again.

100_6255

She went on in and hunkered down for the night.

One by one the others started flying into the tree.   All while I’m calling out…NO….NO girls…come on….lets go night, night…. shaking my worm bucket harder and harder.

100_6253

Seeing that I was on the losing end of this battle….I walked to the tree.

This is Maggie Mae…she was the little chicks Mom…..I suppose I can’t blame her one bit.  I am sure she is scared to death, she is the surviving one of our last batch of hens.  Now she has even survived her little baby.  She has been through a lot.

Here are several more…..

100_6274

I noticed the last two had some difficulty getting into the tree.

One of our other neighbors drove by while I was hen watching….and said that he had seen a bobcat cross through the properties the other evening.  He had also seen a big owl too over the last few days.

I thought with the last two down on the ground, maybe I could catch them before they got into the tree.

No such luck.  Where there is a will there is a way.  They used this fence post to stair step their way up onto a low branch.

100_6263

Once Marion did it….the other one (Amy) was ready to give it a try too….

100_6262

I was trying not to scare them anymore than they apparently are, so I didn’t attempt to go after them.  My other thought was that if I scared them they might go completely over the fence.  Then I would be chasing them all over the neighborhood.  At least if they were in the tree…I would know where they were.

100_6278

Amy seemed to have the hardest time getting up onto the fence post.  I was pretty sure she was going to forego the tree and stay there for the night.  I headed to the fishpond to retrieve my net.  When I came back…sure enough there she was still sitting on that barbed wire.  I tried placing the net over her….but I wasn’t quick enough….down she came.  She made all kinds of racket while I chased her all over the yard with my net.  I wan’t able to get her….but I did hem her in so she had nowhere to go but inside the coop.

WHEW!!!! That was a lot of work.

Beverly looked at us as if to say….REALLY guys…I’m trying to sleep.

I quickly closed the coop and was glad that I had at least two of the girls safe for the night.

This morning….I checked on everyone.

Bad news for Marion…..something chased her inside the fence and took her through the woods.

All the other girls are accounted for.  I am emotionally worn out over these poor hens….it just breaks my heart.

Oh, I try to be a big girl and get over it….but I don’t like it one bit.

I passed the ducks this morning on my way to the coop.  They were resting in our front yard.  It looks like there has been a pillow fight in the yard where their downy feathers lay. Yet nothing ever seems to bother them.

100_6248

I’m really glad that nothing does bother them…..I just don’t understand it.

Why do my little hens have so much trouble?

Hopefully….. tonight I will be able to get them all inside the coop…..safe and sound.

Mission Trip

We have just returned from Kentucky.  It all started with the Youth from our church planning to go on a Mission trip.  Before long people young and old(er) were wanting to go as well.  I believe we had about 76 people attend.

We stayed in an old school which is now used for these purposes.  It was perfect to house us all for the week.

This is a picture of our dorm….

104_5625

There were several teams on which you could serve, Construction, Distribution, Club 180 and last but certainly not least the Kitchen team.

104_5891

Which is where I worked along side these great people.

104_5630

We served over 2,000 meals…..and loved every minute of it.  The first night we arrived we bought a 50 pound bag of potatoes ….and this precious heart was among them. A reminder to serve the whole week with the love that took us there to begin with.

Here is some of the construction site and members as they enjoy some lunch we delivered.

104_5645

The guys had already knocked out the wall to the right and were making great progress.  That is Billy in the blue shirt, he headed up that team.

Some fathers and sons were on this trip.

104_5693

It was really neat to see them work along side each other.

104_5885

This is the outside of their finished project.  This will be part of Club 180, which will offer a counseling area.

Picture taking was limited due to the time I was around the job sites….when we served lunch, I was able to get a pic or two.

104_5700

Club 180  is here all year, ministering to the community.

104_5635

This particular week our group did a Vacation Bible School.

The numbers of kids varied all week, but there were about 70 or so each day.

104_5698

We went there to feed them…

104_5708

That’s when we were able to see some of their sweet little faces.

104_5631

It was neat to see them in action….this was their first week with air conditioning.  This club has been operating for 5 years without air….but that hasn’t stopped the kids from coming.

Another team was building a pavilion at the park.

104_5710

This enabled parents to access playground equipment, for their disabled children, that they could not otherwise.

100_5920

As well as providing a nice place to sit or picnic in a shaded area.

100_5919

It turned out very nice.

100_5918

The distribution team was very interesting too.

The week we were there was the week set aside for preparing the kids for the school year.

104_5659

They would line up…and be asked sizes for the children’s clothes, shoes etc.  A host was appointed to guide them through from beginning to end.

104_5683

They went through the clothing department, each child received two pairs of new pants and two new shirts.104_5682

All areas were covered….

They even had some fun booths for the kids.

104_5680

Haircuts were offered…for the new school year “do”

104_5648

She looks excited!!!!

104_5678

Hard to tell here…..maybe the Mama was the one who was excited about this haircut.

104_5666

There was even a foot washing station….

104_5665

They washed the feet for two reasons.  One because that is what Christ did for his disciples.  Jesus was serving them….He was showing us that we too should serve one another.  It was a outward showing of love and humility….as it still is today.

I heard about this station as some of the group commented on it when they came back to the school, the first day.  It wasn’t until I went to take pictures that I truly felt the love that took place.

Thinking I would grab a quick picture, I had no idea that I would be so moved….. that I would cry.

104_5668

I watched as both parties were touched by this gesture…..

104_5667

These children were soaking up the reason why someone they didn’t know would want to wash their feet.

104_5670

That is what we came to do….to serve, sharing the love of Christ.   (John 13: 1-17)

The other reason was because it prepared their feet for new socks and shoes.

104_5674

Every child received a brand new pair of shoes that they “liked”…and that fit properly.  It took many people to make this work.  Missions starts with a group gathering all these donations, long before they ever leave for the trip.  Many people are a part of this project…even if they weren’t here physically.

104_5650

Health kits containing toothbrushes, toothpaste and other items needed for daily hygiene.  All these packed items bought and packed with loving hands, in advance.

104_5660

Back packs loaded with school supplies were also distributed.

Prayer time was offered to these upcoming students as well.

104_5656

There was much more…food, drinks, popcorn, snow cones, hula hoop contest and fingernail painting to name a few.

People waited in line for hours upon hours just to receive these few items for their children.

The coalmines have  been closed in most of this area.  That was the main industry that provided a living for these people.  Times are hard and the people are struggling.  This was just one way to help the community.

104_5736

Our group worked hard and played hard.  There were practical jokes once we were back at the school….

104_5723

The boys tried to scare the girls….or prank them any way they could.

Which led to even the adults leaving notes around….just in case someone even THOUGHT about messing with things.

104_5742

All that leads to great memories that I hope all our kids took home with them.

104_5792

Fun and thought provoking memories…that will prayerfully take them to many more mission opportunities through life.

104_5744

104_5745

104_5775

104_5851

Especially as they reflect on the life’s that they touched…..

104_5859

104_5860

And the lives that touched them back.

It was a great week.  Interesting how we go to bless others…..and yet come away….feeling blessed ourselves.

Mission opportunities are EVERYWHERE.  We can do missions right where we live and work.

It took me a long time to go other places for missions.  Other places besides my little community.  One day I finally just did it…I stepped out of my comfort zone…and I have been the one that has been blessed through it.

I pray you too will step out, if you haven’t already, you won’t regret it.

MARK 16:15

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

The calm after the storm….

It has rained for over a week, with just a few hours of sunshine breaks here and there.  Our poor little animals are running out of dry space.

104_5548

This is the second or middle pasture….it looks like a lake.  It rained over 2 inches last night.  Most of the past week was just rain….but not last night.  We had thunder and lightening and the rain poured. The wind was blowing so hard that it looked as if it was raining in a horizontal position.

104_5529

Viola -front left, Lucy -front right, Frieda- back left, Mary Jane -back right and behind Mary Jane is the back end of Buster Brown.  This was often how I found them last week.  They would huddle up under a roof of one building or another.  I suppose they didn’t want to stay in their house all day long, so they sought shelter wherever they were.  Once the rain let up…they would move to the next location…and huddled up again.

Yesterday, we took Mary Jane and Buster Brown across the street.  Our neighbor had an area that needed to be  “weeded” .   What better way than to have real weed eaters….right?

They were VERY happy to enter their new buffet.  However about 10:45 last night, Billy and I heard the most awful screaming you could ever imagine.  We looked at each other like “What in the world”?  Then we immediately recognized that “scream”.  Billy ran to the back door and standing there soaking wet and screaming to the top of her little lungs was Mary Jane.  She had apparently been horrified of the storm and decided to come home.  Buster Brown wasn’t too far behind her.  We let them bed down in the garage for the night.  They were pitiful.  I dried them off with a towel and they just loved every minute of that.  We didn’t hear a peep out of them for the rest of the night.

This morning I was concerned about all the animals at the farm…so I headed that way.

That is when I saw how high the water was.  I made my way around a lot of the pasture but most of the animals were in places I couldn’t get to easily.  I went to one area where I could at least get a peek at them from a distance.

I was watching my surroundings so I wouldn’t get stuck in the mud.  I noticed something on the ground, someone had delivered a baby!

Now… I had to locate everyone and see who it was.

I found out that it was Zippy!

104_5594

When I came around the wood pile I saw them.  It was like seeing the calm after the storm.  I hardly noticed all the water damage….I just saw the beauty of this precious new life.

Zippy is very protective, so I keep my distance.  It sure is a cute little thing, I’m guessing it is a girl….but I cannot say for sure.

Zippy looked good and healthy…and so did the baby.

104_5587

It has very distinct black markings on it’s ears….

104_5560

and the mane has a lot more black in it than any of the others.

I kind of feel sorry for Moses….Zippy doesn’t want him anywhere around.  I wish she wouldn’t act like that to him.

Jack and Moses decide to just leave Mama alone.

104_5585

Jack has grown so much….he is almost as tall as his father.

I noticed that Zippy’s eyes look tired here, but she did just have a baby after all.

104_5590

I will have to say that I was a little surprised that it was her that gave birth.  Jack was born last July 4th.  I have read that donkey’s carry their babies 11 to 12 months.  Most articles lean toward 12 months gestation.  I knew Zippy looked “ready” as far as being big and waddling, but I thought we wouldn’t have a baby until August.

Now, as far as the cows go,  Zsa Zsa is our last one.  She is getting close to delivery too, but I am not about to guess on that one.

Zippy is a great mother.  She stays right with her baby…with the exception of running off Moses and Jack!

While she was doing that….I did get this one picture of the baby by itself.

104_5593

But then….Mom was right back….

104_5595

ready to protect and take care of her baby.

The New Chicks on the block….

Last week when my niece and I went to pick out chickens we also got to see some quail eggs.

104_5305

Aren’t they beautiful?  They were just tiny little things….

I like it when an owner gets so excited about their animals that they want to show them to you.  He not only showed us these eggs…but the incubator with all the babies in it as well.  Here he is holding a few in his hands….they were so small.

104_5304

These little babies were hatched that day!  They were just precious.

He showed us some Bob Whites.  I don’t think I have ever seen a Bob White.  I have heard them before…the call they make sounds just like they are saying…BOB WHITE…BOB WHITE.  Maybe that is how they got their names….I suppose I might look that up.

104_5307

Anyway, the female has the yellow/creme color on her head and white is on the male’s head.

104_5310

I believe this was a bob white egg he retrieved from the cage….and yes, that is a little poo on his finger.  It is my experience that a little animal matter here and there is just part of the process.  When we first started having all these different animals….I wasn’t so comfortable around all that.  But it is kind of like having a newborn baby…you get used to the diapers and all that goes with it.

We picked out several hens that day….I tried to write the names of the kind of hens down as he told me.  Hopefully I am getting them right.

These two are Wyandotte’s

104_5405

A Welsummer

104_5456

A Cuckoo Maran

104_5428

It is supposed to lay a “chocolate” egg….which is really just a very dark brown egg.  I think that will be pretty neat to see!

Now I am still trying to figure out the rest of them…..

Matter of fact I may have all of them wrong so …if you know for sure…please feel free to leave me a message and let me know.

I have a Rhode Island Red, a  New Hampshire Red and an Ameraucana…which is supposed to have a light blue/green egg, oh …and a Golden Maran.

104_5433

I think this is the Rhode Island red…?

104_5457

I think this is the New Hampshire Red…?

And maybe this is the Ameraucana…?

104_5386

I think this is a very pretty hen….maybe this is the Golden Maran…which should also give chocolate eggs.

104_5426

So far none of the girls have laid any eggs.  I had a little talk with them about that….it’s like…past time.  After all they have been at their new home for over a week now.

Maybe they are waiting to be named….

I am working on that.

Hopefully they will cooperate and I will get to take some pictures of all the different color eggs soon.

I can’t wait!

Maggie Mae and her baby chick

June 10th our girl was sitting on eggs.

104_5065

That same night…Billy took our other girl to the neighbor’s coop so she would be safe and be around some friends.

104_5067

Our girl continued sitting on eggs.  Billy had worked hard to seal up any spots he could find where the predators apparently had been entering.

I set the live trap….in hopes of finding out what had been bothering our girls.

104_5227

Only for the creature to toss my flowers out of the window box……

104_5228

The big rock by the rocking chair was in the flower box, weighing down the artificial flowers.  Whatever is digging around is pretty strong.

My vote is still a raccoon.   But we may never know….because even to this day….I haven’t been able to lure it into my trap.  I have tried…an egg…cat food….and peanut butter.

NOTHING….

But, I am NOT giving up.

We cleared about a 4 foot space away from the fence line so the creature that is lurking in the brush can be seen more easily.

104_5234

We also found some coated chicken wire that came from a commercial poultry farm.  It doesn’t rust like the other and is sturdier.  It is attached to our existing fence, filling in the gaps.  It is also laid in such a way that it should help prevent creatures from being able to dig under the fence.

104_5235

There are still some places we are working on…but all in all it seems to be more secure.  The one thing I have learned is….if the predator wants in bad enough…..it will probably find a way.

I could see our other girl from the road when I would head to the farm to feed Laverne.  She seemed just fine.  Our neighbors said she fit right in….there wasn’t any fighting among the hens…so that was good news.  They did say that whenever I would drive by on the 4 wheeler she would run to the gate.   That is what all our girls used to do whenever I arrived at the coop, if they were in the yard.  It made me miss my girls all the more.

Billy came in one day with that look.

I hate to tell you….BUT.

Yes, something had gotten our girl in the neighbor’s coop.  She was the only one.  Whatever it was didn’t bother any of their girls…..just ours.

We were heart broken.

I continued to check on the last one we had in our coop…..sitting on her eggs.  I will have to tell you that I dreaded opening the coop door each morning.  I was so afraid something was going to happen to her too.  I tried to just…. be prepared.

All we could do….was wait.

June 20th I noticed a broken egg in the nest…..

104_5233

I was so excited!!!!    BUT I didn’t want to get too excited because I couldn’t hear any cheeping or is it chirping?  I began to wonder if possibly the egg wasn’t fertile and maybe she had opened it herself…?  I didn’t know…this was our first time going through this.

Each day I stood quietly….trying to hear….something….anything….but NOPE.

June 26th…..Mama was making a little noise when I entered the coop…..then I heard the peeping!!!!

104_5268

WOO….HOO…. we had a baby….we really, really had a baby!!!!!

I was so excited.  I was snapping pictures right and left.  I suppose the other one didn’t want to get left out of the photo session….because all of a sudden….there was baby number two!

104_5273

How exciting!!!

104_5284

How sweet is that?!?!?!?!

My niece came to visit me for a few days….so we went to pick out some new hens.

104_5322

We decided to get a few babies too, thinking they could all hang out together.  They were just a little older…and they are not buffs either.

We picked out 8 hens and 5 babies.  That would give us 9 hens counting the Mama we already had and 7 babies counting the 2 new ones that had just hatched.

They are all different kinds.  I am hoping that we will be able to name them and be able to tell them apart now.

Just as I suspected….babies are frail.  We already lost one of the hatched babies….and two of the ones I bought.

BUT….

Mama…which my niece and I named Maggie Mae and her other baby are doing well.   Not knowing if the babies are boy’s or girls…we will have to wait on their names.

104_5326

It is sweet to watch Maggie Mae interact with her chick.  She isn’t roosting on the bar at night as far as I know.  She has moved to the floor….into a corner.

104_5335

She tucks baby away so that it is nice and warm….and protects it as best she can.

They ventured outside the other day….first time in over three weeks for Maggie Mae.  She was devoted to hatching those eggs.  She gave herself a dust bath and really seemed to enjoy being back outdoors.

Each morning she waits until all the other hens exit the coop….then she brings her baby out with her.

Here is a quick clip of them outdoors this morning.

I am keeping the other babies in a cage.  Seems like the bigger hens were eating all their food and intimidating them. They would stand in a corner…peeping their little hearts out.  They seem much calmer in the cage….I suppose it is their security.  Maybe Maggie Mae will eventually watch out for them too.

I take the cage in and out each day so they can enjoy the fresh air.

I tried putting Maggie Mae and her baby in the cage for their protection….but the new baby is so small it could walk right through the cage openings.

I will just have to let them do what comes naturally.  Hopefully…all will be well.

They sure were enjoying life this morning!

It is sweeeeet…..so very sweet.
