New Additions!

I have a friend that loves her girls and boy roo’s as much as I do…..maybe even more.

She has other animal loving friends as well.  She and one of her other friends had some extra birds that needed a home.  That is where I come in!

She had a roo that was related to my last roo.  His name is also Sylvester just like my old roo.  Our neighbor took him in last night.  This morning I checked in on him and all is well.  He is crowing and is more than happy in his new home.  Of course why wouldn’t he be.  He has 10 new lady friends to flirt with!

I was supposed to get three new hens.  However, things changed….two of them started crowing!

I now have two new Roo’s and a Hen.  They are Silkie’s and they are very cute!  They have all grown up together so they are used to one another.  Which makes have 2 roosters easier.  If they begin to fight we may have to separate them…but for now….they are best friends.

They have already been named.  I suppose we will keep the names, they are cute.

100_9064

Hyde is the first one, Jekyll is the second one, and Tiny is the last one.  Tiny is a hen….the other two are the rooster’s.

They surveyed their new living quarters last night.  However, they stuck close to one another.

100_9057

Amy is the red hen that has the black on her tail.  She is a beautiful big hen.  She is a little bossy though.  She let them know that she is in charge at the moment.  But Maggie Mae did the same thing….  Actually neither one of them are really in charge….but they like to think so.

100_9052

Silkie’s have a very good nature, being docile helps to make them good pets.   It is said that they only lay a few times a week, so the egg production is not as much.  That’s alright, they are supposed to be good broody hens.  Meaning they like to be Mama’s.  I would love for them to hatch some babies for us.

My friend that loves her girls as much as I, is a school teacher.  She has actually let her classroom hatch eggs, so they can see the process.  I think that is wonderful… children raised in the city don’t usually get to experience that.

Ok…back to the Silkie’s, notice the dark skin and the fur that grows on the legs and feet!

100_9053

Those are trademark signs of a silkie.  They also have blue earlobes and five toes instead of the traditional 4.

They are very fluffy, so soft in fact that is why they are called Silkie’s, their furry feathers feel like silk.

100_9056

Amy seemed to be the most inquisitive or maybe the most threatened.  She watched them closely….and gave out a few demanding clucks as well.

100_9066

This is Tiny…the hen…. she sure is cute with that fluffy top notch!

WP_20140203_002

This is Hyde….it’s been raining…so his feathers aren’t as fluffy this morning…but they all seem to be just fine.

It is always exciting to get new additions!

Maybe tomorrow I’ll get to hear those little furry rooster’s crow….

Musical Saw

My Brother in law plays a musical saw.  While visiting this last week I was able to record him playing one of my favorite songs.

It is so neat to watch such beautiful music come from of all things….a saw.

I hope you enjoy it.

ONE DAY….

Well, I would love to write about the animals today….but truth is…there isn’t anything new to write.  They are freezing along with everyone else.

Since we have had such a cold winter this year, I have tackled a few things on my “one day” list.  You probably have a list like that as well.

You know…. it’s that list you make as you see things that need more time and attention than you have at the present time.

For instance I have had this garbage that has been wearing the sticker on the side for… well…..let’s just say a long time.  Anyway, I attempted to pull it off one day.  That just opened a can of worms.  Part of the sticker came off…the rest stayed on.  Yes, I tried warm soapy water, windex, and all the standard cleaning stuff.  BUT…to no avail.  The parts that came off were really just the top paper part, leaving the sticky part on the can.  Of course that just makes things worse because dirt and grime just stick all the more.  SO …. that was one of the things I put on my…one day…when I have time…I’m gonna tackle that trash can one more time.

WP_20140118_001

AND SO I DID…..

WP_20140118_002

AND TA-DA…..it’s clean as a whistle!  NO STICKY LEFT.

What did I do?  I’m so glad you asked.

Actually, I’m not sure why it has taken me so long to learn this little trick.  Kind of makes me irritated that I hadn’t thought of it earlier in life.

I used Pam cooking Spray.  It took all of about 1 minute for the sticky to come off.  Of course….it makes sense….it’s oil.

I’ve been using oil lately to take labels off jars and things that I want to reuse.

During Christmas when I got tree sap on my hands from decorating with live tree limbs, I put vegetable oil or Pam Spray on them and instantly the sap came off.

Trash can clean….WOO HOO.

Alright, now one more thing I marked off my list was curtains for a bedroom.  The shams are not used on the pillows in this room.  I have looked and looked for some curtains and just couldn’t find what I wanted.

I am NOT a seamstress AT ALL.  Matter of fact all my poor home economic teachers would cringe if they saw any of the items I have sewed.  But that’s alright.  I passed the class and bless their hearts, they did all they could.

Here is a picture of the room before.

104_1672

I decided to use the pillow shams for curtains.  I made a seam across the top….longways across each sham.  I left enough room for the size rod I would be using….then another seam, making a pocket for the rod.

Billy hung the rod for me…

WP_20140101_004

He also hung the little mirror wall decor…..

WP_20140101_005

Finished!

They aren’t anything special…but I used what I had.  I even already had the curtain rod…so it worked out nice.

I love to think outside the box….finding uses for items that aren’t intended for that particular purpose.

I especially like it….when it turns out.

Now…It’s time to tackle some more things on that “ONE DAY” list.  Because frankly when Spring rolls around…I plan to be OUTSIDE with the critters!

I’m Right Here

Billy and I went to the Gulf for a few days.  The weather was so beautiful, much warmer than what we are having at home.  There was a cool day here and there, but all in all the weather was perfect for this time of year.

I was troubled by a comment I had just heard on the computer.  A beautiful young lady commented about being an Atheist.  I looked up from the computer screen and peered out the window trying to grasp things I had just heard.

And that’s when I saw this.

100_8751

The most beautiful sunset I have ever seen.

WOW….How Majestic is Our Lord.

It was as if God was saying….I’M RIGHT HERE!

Everyone can believe as they choose.

As for me…I believe.

It isn’t because I saw a beautiful sunset.  However, I am thankful that He reveals Himself through creation, so I can lovingly be reminded to always give Him glory, honor and praise.

Romans 1:20

King James Version (KJV)

20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

Baby….. It’s Cold Outside……

We are NOT used to COLD weather, BUT it is COLD.

Saturday, before the really, really cold weather hit we checked in on all the animals.

I cut up some apples for the donkey ‘s and ponies.  Ended up that only the donkey’s came around for those….

100_8650

I’m not sure Billy could have handled any more mouths at one time anyway…

100_8651

They love him……and his treats!

100_8648

I was glad to see that for the first time…..our baby Jill…trusted him enough to come up and be hand fed.   That is a great sign that she is warming up to us.

100_8644

This is Shirley…she is licking her lips, and has milk on her nose.  She just nursed her mother Cupid.  Remember….Shirley was Laverne’s twin sister.  She has gotten pretty big, just as God designed it, her mother’s milk has made her big and strong.

100_8643

Of course I had to baby talk my adopted baby….TUG.   He is so sweet.

100_8636

He and Billy are buds too.

100_8642

After he loves on us….he goes back to his other adopted Mother…Brandy.  She took Tug in and has nurtured him along with her baby girl, Madre.

100_8654

Tug is on the left and Madre is on the right.

Not all cows will do that….she and Punkin both nursed Tug.  He tends to hang out a little bit more with Brandy though.  Interesting that his real mother (Bailey) still doesn’t really pay him any attention.

104_3969

I am hoping that she will be a better mother this next time.  If she isn’t than we have been advised to sale her.  We will see, I have high hopes that she will do better.  Often,  humans rise to the occasion when given a second chance, perhaps she will too.

Billy’s been hard at work before and now during this cold spell.

100_8663

The goats, chickens and cows seem to be alright for now.  I hate it for all of them.  It is really hard to adapt when you aren’t used to the cold.  So far they have been real troopers.  Billy has been such a good care taker.  He does all the hard stuff.

The animals and I are fortunate to have such a caring person to share this life with.  He has been making sure we are all as warm as he can make us.

One way the animals stay warm is to keep food in them.  They are eating machines right now.  He keeps the hay ring full so they can keep going.  I try to keep his belly full….so he can keep going.

We have had plenty of treats, especially since Christmas…so…..

I found a recipe for some treats that all the animals could have.

100_8658

They have oats and molasses in them….

The recipe made up a good little batch.

100_8659

Billy hand fed one to each of the big goats this morning, they seemed to really like them.

Hmmmmmm…….Now that I think about it….It seems that the animals and us humans aren’t very different at all.

That is what Billy and I are doing….eating(lots) and trying to stay warm too.

Seeing Christmas in a different way this year……

The other day Billy and I were in the pasture.

He set out fresh hay in the ring for all the animals.  As soon as they heard us, they came through the wood line to greet us.WP_20131221_003

Before long we had thirteen cows, four donkey’s, three goats and two ponies.

WP_20131221_010

They are beautiful creatures and full of personality.

The next morning we sang Away in a Manger in our church service.  My mind instantly went back to the pasture.  How vivid the sights and smells were.  The hay was fresh and smelled nice, yet there were those normal animal smells.

I thought about Mary and her ride to Bethlehem.  It was approximately a 90 mile journey.  I have heard that they would normally travel about 10 miles a day back then.  Even a mile on a donkey’s back when you are expecting would be a rough ride, especially if you were near your delivery date.

Our donkey’s are so sweet.  I could imagine Moses or Jack carrying Mary on their back.  I could also imagine that Mary and Joseph loved their donkey like we love ours.

What a relief it must have been to finally have reached their destination.  Yet, what a disappointment it must have been when they couldn’t find a place to stay.  Whew, can you imagine….Mary must have been exhausted….and Joseph more than a little bit worried.  Once they were told they could stay in the stable, it must have been most welcome, despite the fact that it was just that….a stable.

It probably smelled something like I smelled the day before, fresh hay….and the other smells too.

I don’t know if animals were in the stable or not.  But, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the stable was full.

I thought about all of our creatures with their big beautiful brown eyes, and inquisitive personalities.  I wouldn’t doubt that they all encircled the manger after Jesus was born, trying to figure out what all the commotion was about.

DSCF2841

Just think…possibly they were the only ones who witnessed the birth of Christ.

If so,  they would have heard the small talk that Mary and Joseph had, as they gazed at their newborn.

Possibly….they watched Mary count His little fingers and toes.

Maybe they even got to see the shepherds come and find Jesus laying in the manger wrapped in cloths.  Yes, just as the angels had proclaimed it would be, and watched as the shepherds hurried off to tell others.

In Luke it tells that Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.  Can you even imagine what she was thinking?

To think that God had trusted you enough….to be the Mother of Jesus.

Even though those were not the conditions that Mary and Joseph would have chosen….I’m sure it was a beautiful sight in spite of it all.

I think about part of another song ….

“Surely The Presence of the Lord”…..

Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place.
I can feel His mighty power and His grace.
I can hear the brush of angel’s wings,
I see glory on each face.
Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place

Yes, I would say that if there were indeed animals in that stable that night…..they were very, very fortunate.

I pray you feel the presence of the Lord today.

Merry Christmas……

Things aren’t always pretty…..

I’m sure you remember me telling you about Miss Mara, my hard headed hen.

WP_20131115_002

Mara continued day after day to get out and go on the “other” side of the fence.

When morning would come she would pace the fence line acting as if she wanted back in.

WP_20131115_001

It became a game to her, I suppose.  She would allow me to get close…only if I was on the opposite side of the fence than her.  I would tell her to come on….and I would start walking along the fence, toward the gate.  She happily flitted along the way….until we neared the entrance.

WP_20131115_003

That’s when she would promptly make an about turn and head back into the wood line.  ARGH….this went on day after day.  Most of the time I would have to finally just walk away.  Eventually,  she would get  SERIOUS about wanting back in….and whoever was around would let her in.    However, by dusk, the whole scenario would start all over again.

I discovered how she was getting out.  She would flutter onto a cedar cross bar,  that is part of the fencing, and then she was able to flutter again, gaining just enough height to be able to let herself over.

Before I knew it ….Quinn and Lynn had followed in Mara’s footsteps.

WP_20131119_001

She had set a VERY BAD EXAMPLE.

They were almost impossible to get back into the fence as well.  I will have to say, THANKFULLY,  that they didn’t continue this bad habit.  I was very glad…I can’t say the same for Mara.  She continued….and finally one day….Mara wasn’t at the fence anymore.

I really hated it when I arrived one morning….and she never showed up.  All day I kept my eye out for her….but she never appeared.  It is possible that she went through the woods and found somewhere else to call home….but it is not real likely.

A few days later I found parts of one of my hens in the yard.  It wasn’t Mara….it was one of my red girls.  I think that Mara started it though.  Once a predator gets one…they start showing up, over and over.  Within a few days I was missing another….and then I found a mound of black feathers.  My poor rooster Sylvester was gone as well.

That put us down to 9 hens.  It hasn’t been a good year for them….

Our automatic door opener isn’t cooperating either.  Due to the fact that we do not have electricity at the coop…we have to use a battery.  We have solar panels to help with recharging the battery…but things get out of kilter easily.  The time change has been a tricky thing for the timer too.  Several times we would check on the girls just after dark and the poor babies would be huddled next to the automatic door opening….but the door would have shut early, leaving them stranded outside.

I know…it is so sad…and pitiful.  Fortunately, nothing bothered them during all that adjusting with the door.

Billy finally said…you know…I’m going to do something different.  l’m not going to depend on this opener…we will build them another enclosed area that hooks to the coop and they can come and go freely.  It will be completely enclosed, top and sides.  Then we can to let them free range in the big yard when we are around to make sure they are alright…otherwise they will free range in this smaller area.  They will be safer, or at least as safe as you can make it.

Well…..it’s been COLD…and RAINY…so the construction hasn’t started yet.

Sunday, Billy let the girls out after church.  I didn’t know he had.   About 9:00 that evening he asked me if I had put the girls up.  No…I didn’t let them out today.  I knew we weren’t going to be home long.  He said…Uh…Oh….I did.  I let them out…we better get home.  We were in two different cars so I stopped at the coop and he went home to take the trash can to the road.  I know…we have such exciting lives….

ANYWAY….

I just so happened to have my handy dandy LED flashlight with me.  Naturally the goats greeted me at the gate and followed me all the way to the chicken coop.  I opened the main door and shined my light inside, just before stepping in.  I usually hurry in and close the door, so the goats won’t go in.  But that day I didn’t I opened the door and was ready to do my headcount.

MUCH TO MY HORROR….A Raccoon was in one of the nesting boxes…looking back at me.

The goats were standing by my side….all of us….we were just looking at this raccoon.  And he was just looking at us.

Amy…one of our prettiest hens….walked right past me and the goats…. into the yard.  It was as if she was in a daze.

I stood at the door and started screaming for Billy.  The raccoon continued to look at me….I continued to scream for Billy.  But Billy apparently couldn’t hear me. Finally…. after about 5 times…he said …WHAT??????

OH!!!!…..COME HERE!!!….COME HERE!!!….. I said.

HURRY….

RACCOON….

HURRY…..

That coon was beautiful….he had a huge fluffy tail…and the cutest little black mask across his eyes.

Then I saw my POOR innocent girl….laying there….without her head….

It was awful.  The whole scene was UGLY…

The coon started moving, squeezing himself between the wall and the nesting boxes.  He was trying his best to back away from the light….inching… into the darkness.

About that time…..Billy showed up.

The other girls were pretty calm…all in all.  They made their little chicken noises…but they handled all the excitement well.

We dealt with the coon.

We closed the small opening and secured the girls coop for the night.   We couldn’t find where Amy had gone.  I’m sure she decided she would just take her chances in the yard.  Bless her heart.

The next morning…Amy was back.  She was with the goats in the little goat house.

I feel pretty sure raccoon’s have been a lot of our problem this year, as far as predators go.  There are many more in the nearby woods, more than likely.

When we got home of course my mind was reeling.

I kept reflecting on scriptures referring to light.  Like this one for example.

John 3:20

20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.

Of course in scripture the light is THE LORD.

Ephesians 5:13

But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them,

When we draw close to the Lord, His light shines and we can see things in our own lives that are not attractive.  Maybe things that we never saw as ugly before….but when His light shines….it reveals what is really there.

Interesting that darkness is just the absence of light.  The brighter the light….the better you can see.

I hope that in the future…when God reveals areas I need to work on in my life.  I hope I remember this sight.

Only so it will remind me of how ugly sin is, big or little, and how it must look through God’s eyes.   UGLY…..

It is a very serious thing….and there is NOTHING attractive about it.

He loves the sinner…but hates the sin and what it does, to us and others.

New Pole Barn

Winter has finally moved in.  Late summer Billy worked on designing and constructing a pole barn for the farm.  Bless his heart, he tries to explain to me what it will look like before hand.  I can get the general idea…but I have a hard time really judging size.  I always have to have him walk it off for me, or compare it to another building that I would be familiar with.

He drew out his plan, we studied it and tweaked it together and then he began.  Billy can’t build everything these days…we just have too much going.  He has some great guys that work well with him.  They take his plans and the little things Billy visualizes and they make them come to life.

Since I’m not a builder….I try to help wherever I can.  He tells me what he is thinking….and I get my wheels turning.  My way to help this time was in the recycle wood department.  He wanted to have a sawyer come and cut some trees into lumber.  That’s where I come in!  I happened to be running errands one day and passed a house where a tree service was cutting trees.  It wasn’t just a few trees….it was a whole lot of  HUGE trees.  I passed by and thought….ew…ew…I wonder.  Just like a magnet, I was drawn back to this house.  The men were getting into their trucks.  I rolled down my window and asked a man if they were taking the trees to the dump or did they have somewhere else they were going with them.  He said they were taking them to the dump.  WELL….I told him that my husband sure could use them if they wanted to save a dump fee.  He talked with his boss…and the rest is history.

100_7112

Since they were loading up anyway…they delivered the wood….right then.  They followed me to the land and unloaded them.  That made Billy very, very  happy!  Which in turn….made me happy too.

I have no doubt that God allowed all that to transpire.  I get amazed at how so many things work out….like this.   Seriously what are the odds that I would pass that house at the exact time they were loading up to dump all those trees.  It was God’s perfect timing,  I love to watch Him work out details like this.

Billy lined up a sawyer to come out with his portable saw, transformed into beautiful, useful post.

100_7109

The sides of the trees, where the bark is, was laid to the side for another use.

100_7334

Construction began…..

Like I said before…I can’t always visualize it, until I actually see it.  He had talked about using those scraps of the wood, bark side, for the siding.  Alright…I understood that. But when I saw it…I was totally blown away.  I didn’t know the siding would go up and down instead of across.

100_7699

I thought that added a beautiful touch!

Some post were placed in front with wire and a gate….

100_7702

It looks so nice.

Completed just in time to load up the fresh hay rolls.

WP_20131102_001

And…..before the yucky weather settled in.

WP_20131203_004

The barn was filled.  The animals started hanging around immediately.  It’s probably like us smelling cookies in the oven….always hard to wait until it’s time.

The cold and the rain have arrived.  The first hay roll was placed in the ring…..

WP_20131203_006

Clementine and Punkin wasted no time enjoying it.

WP_20131203_007 (1)

However there was evidence that Joy had been there as well……

Actually all of them either had hay hanging from their eyebrows, mouths or were laying down chewing cud.  Needless to say, they were very content.  And THAT is what makes Billy and I happy.

Yes….I think it looks real purty….

100_7365

especially when I park my Little Green Tractor next to it!

Time in the Pasture……

It was a beautiful day today, but the forecast is not looking so great for the rest of the week.  We have had a little rain here and there so the pasture is already muddy.  I dreaded going through the pasture.  Reluctantly, I pulled on my boots and marched through the gate.  All the animals were back in the fields.   I was looking down, trying to find the grassy patches to step on.

As I passed by the pond, I heard some quacking, and was surprised to see four ducks swimming happily.  I smiled as I thought that at least they have been happy with the wet weather.  Besides, Billy has been hoping some ducks would start using the pond.  We have had a visitor a time or two but perhaps these will take up residence.

WP_20131204_001

While admiring the ducks, I saw the donkey’s heading my way.  Whenever they see us inside or outside the fence they come to greet us.  Always glad to see you,  now how can you not smile at that.

Our first donkey was Moses, he wasn’t real interested in being petted.  It didn’t take long though for him to start inching closer and closer to us.  Finally we were able to pet him, now he seems to love every minute of it.  Zippy came into the pasture shortly after Moses and that made him even happier.  Zippy has a different personality, she is a bit snippy at times.  Especially when it comes feeding time, she gets down right hateful.  However, Moses loves her just the way she is.

Their first child was a boy, and we named him Jack.  He wouldn’t let me get very close for the first year.  I had heard that you needed to “imprint” them within that first year.  I wasn’t sure I really knew what all that entailed, but I knew I wanted him to be sweet and like to be touched.  The year came and went and I was only able to pet him a very few times.  I was afraid that I had missed my opportunity.  Slowly but surely month by month he started inching his way closer to us.  He eventually let me pet him all I wanted.  Matter of fact, now I am the one that has to walk away first.  He is the absolute sweetest little boy donkey around.

WP_20131204_007

This is about as good of a picture as I can get nowadays.  He stays so close, loving every scratch and pet that he can get.  I sure am glad that he decided to like me.  Oh…and he likes Billy too.  Matter of fact, they are pretty good buds, it’s pretty sweet to watch them together.

This summer Zippy gave birth to a little girl, we named her Jill…of course.  She was and is a beauty.  I can’t believe how fast she is growing.

WP_20131204_003

She is doing the same thing Jack did at this age.  She won’t let me get too close.  I’ve touched her two or three times, and that was only if I was quick.  She scampers off, then quickly turns to watch me from a safe distance.  Today she decided to ease a little closer since I was petting Jack.

WP_20131204_005

She seems to have straight hair like her father, at least for now.  Today it looks like her front half is dark and the back half is light.  It may change color again by Spring time.

Moses has dark gray, straight hair.  Zippy has lighter gray hair with a wave .  Jack looks more like Zippy, yet he has a sweet, easy going personality like Moses.

WP_20131204_002

I believe we will win Jill over before long.  She sure is curious, she sniffed my hand and let me touch the soft fur on her head today.  She feels just like a stuffed animal, with her winter coat.  Those soft fluffy ears are just about too adorable.

I was so excited that she was letting me take her picture this close that I totally forgot about the others.  Well, until I saw them out of the corner of my eye…..

WP_20131204_006

There they were…peering through the trees.  Jack is on the left, notice his wavy hair, and Moses is on the right.

Zippy just watched today, content with seeing her family interact.  I did give her a good hug before I left though.

I couldn’t help but wonder why they would want to come hang out with me.  Being curious is one thing…..coming to see if I have a treat…I could understand….but just to hang out?  Why do they love me so much?  I haven’t done anything special….anything to really earn their love.  They just do…..

On my way out of the pasture I turned around and watched them….watching me.   I am glad I didn’t let a little mud keep me away today, I sure would have missed out, if I had.

WP_20131204_008

I headed back to the house, when I noticed the sun setting.  God never ceases to amaze me with all His creation.  Once again that same thought went through my mind….why does He love me?  I’ve done nothing to deserve it or earn it.  He just does…….and it’s humbling.

Miss Mara….

Things have been pretty good at the coop, I mean the girls get along alright with one another, most of the time.

Back in the summer Mara decided to start roosting in a tree and just about drove me crazy.  She had no idea how much danger she put herself in.  I was finally able to break the cycle and we haven’t had any more trouble.   Not until…..this past week.

One morning I went to check in on everyone and low and behold if Miss Priss wasn’t standing outside the fence.  She started pacing back and forth wanting to come in with the other girls.  However, every time I went to lead her in….she would run off.  This went on for two days. I was most surprised that she lasted that long in the woods.  I had to start doing a role call at bedtime again.  Since the new automatic door opener was installed I haven’t had to go count as much.  Sometimes we are busy when dusk rolls around and as long as I saw everyone sometime during the day then I usually felt like all was well.  Especially since the predator thing hasn’t been an issue in the past few months.

Last night we were gone before dusk….so once we arrived home for the evening we checked in on everyone.  Some of the girls didn’t make it inside before the automatic door closed.  I think the timer may be off.  Ever since daylight savings time change, we have had to adjust the timer over and over. When we got home some were cuddled up together in the window boxes on the front porch.  Some others were huddled at the closed automatic door….bless their little hearts.  A few others were in the new goat house we built.  Billy and I started lifting them up and placing them inside the coop.  They are so funny when they are sleepy.  It reminds me of picking up a toddler and carrying them to bed.  They just go with the flow….they are so out of it.

Once we had everyone we could find we did a head count.  We were shy two hens.  That really bothered me….but then I saw that one of them was Miss Mara.  Honestly, I didn’t worry as much because she has been able to fend for herself so far.  She actually likes doing the escape artist thing.  She slips away without you even knowing she is gone.  I hoped that Quinn (the other hen) was with her.  Actually, they needed to be together because it was cold and they needed each other to stay warm.

This morning….bright and early….here came Mara and Quinn rounding the corner from the woods.  I held the gate open and they strutted themselves right inside.  I was glad to see them….but I don’t want Mara teaching Quinn her bad habits.

At dusk tonight I went to make sure everyone went inside.  Everyone filed in like they should….except Mara.

She WOULD NOT go in the coop.  She kept hovering around the fence line…near where she roosting this past summer.

So I resorted to Plan B.  It isn’t the way I like to get her in the coop….but it does work….most of the time.

I caught her in my big old FISH net!

She clucked and carried on like I was killing her.

I had to march all the way across an acre of land to get her back to the coop….with her carrying on like that.  I’m sure the neighbors think I am just plain out loony.

Especially when they see me with a chicken in a fish net….telling her to HUSH none the less.

Finally….she accepted defeat….and did hush.

Taking her inside I lowered the net onto the floor and let her walk out.  If she was capable…I have no doubt that she would have stomped her feet and slammed her bed room door.  She scooted up the ramp and squeezed herself in between two others who were already settled down.   Once she had gotten them stirred up she decided to move and go to the roosting bar.

Here you can see she has placed her head under the feet of this blonde hen.  She was trying her best to nudge her off the roost.  She wanted THAT spot.  Eventually….she got….THAT…spot.

Ruby decided she would just fly to the rafters where she wouldn’t have to deal with Mara any longer.

I just shook my head and told everyone good night.

I do know this……Mara is one hard headed hen.
