Brenda….

Spring is around the corner and I can’t wait!

I love seeing green grass pop its little head up from the old brown soil.  Buds start forming on the tree limbs and birds seem to sing their little hearts out.

Billy and I stay outside until it’s dark once the weather allows.  There are so many fun things to do.

It also allows more time to spend with the animals.  I miss that in the late fall and winter months.  I seems like the animals like us to be around too….some of them more than others.

This is Brenda.

She isn’t like any of my other hens.

She is kind of like a dog.

She likes to stay right with me.

On this particular day, I was attaching some chicken wire to the existing fence.

Why?

Because the goats who are often on the other side of this fence always do this.

and then they try to get their head unstuck….

which most of the time they are successful without help….but….if they can’t then they just start screaming.

We should have never put field fence up for goat use.  Let’s just say we have lived and learned.

Anyway, this chicken wire I was attaching makes it a more useful space for most any animal we have in the fence.  It is heavy duty industrial stuff it’s coated and is much more durable than regular chicken wire.  It doesn’t rust and break down like regular chicken wire does.

So, I took a few hours one day to work on the fence.  Since I planned to be right with the chickens I let them of the coop to free range.

They were so excited when I opened the run door but they hesitated walking out the door.  I left it open and walked away.  Looking back and forth at one another they began to cackle and squawk  like I’ve never heard.   They eventually started filing out of the coop run.  They flitted here and there, pecking the fresh green grass and the ground for any bug they could find.

I smiled as I watched them explore the yard.  Getting back to work I  pulled and tugged and zip tied here and there.  It had only been about 5 minutes and I was ready to move my roll of wire a little further up the fence line.  I got tickled as I began fastening.

Some of the other girls had joined Brenda….they too were right at my feet.

They then decided to sun bath right there…..

right where I was trying to work.

Most of the others joined them.

I looked back at the yard.

Hmmm….they had all this space, all this nice green grass and they gather under my feet in one corner and sun bathe.

I really didn’t mind.  All the animals sure do know how to make me feel loved.

Even the goats take their turns checking out what I’m doing and greeting me.

Yet Brenda is just more friendly than the rest.

Or just checking on everyone…..Brenda is there.

She will even let me rock her on the front porch of the coop.

Yep, she’s my buddy….and I am hers.
